General themes that have emerged (and are emerging) in the project
There are many themes in this project - particularly we have understood the development of the themes in this project by our attention to social, culural and economic movements and collectivities that have developed in specific times and spaces.
Some of our collectivities include:
Sixteenth century cultural, political and governmental movements.
Eighteenth century philosophical, artistic, poetic and political movements.
Aristocratic and bourgeois cultural agents that have been seeking to revive narratives of Englishness and social class.
Imperial Cultural agents that are creating colonial identities of 'civilisation', 'taste' and 'distinction'. Particularly those in India, Sri Lanka and Malaysia.
Nineteenth century cultures of self-reliance, work and independence.
Twentieth Century cultures of individuality, self-reliance and independence - (The phenomenon of the Englishman/white American and his suburban castle; and the Hyacinth Bucket effect).
Contemporary postmodern consumer movements that have sought to re-work identities of Englishness through new narratives of consumption - i.e. in Japan and China.
